Who Is Moonlight Strategy?
Welcome to Moonlight Strategy. A place where we embrace the wisdom of proven methodologies by day, but can’t help but flirt with unconventional thinking at night.
While the name Moonlight was originally inspired by a poet, I see its limitless interpretations. For example, the act of “moonlighting” is quite fitting. Whether a person does it out of desperation or intrigue, the gesture demonstrates the power of going for what you want despite traditional boundaries. It’s leading with a fearlessly practical attitude. At Moonlight, we believe that is the mindset needed to make big shifts.
What Does It Mean to Be Both Evidence-Based and Experimental?
The foundation of our work is well-researched, but we aren’t afraid to try something new. This blended approach is rooted in my background.
My first love: Industrial-Organizational Psychology, which is the study and application of psychological concepts and practices to a company or organization and its workforce. It is solely reliant on evidence-based practices; a necessary role for formalizing a complex and nuanced function like HR.
My second love: Human-Centered Design, which is a problem-solving technique that puts real people at the center of the development process. It is inherently creative, bespoke, and experimental. It's a practice that has brought much-needed credibility to qualitative research, intuition, and play.
We use techniques and principles from both disciplines when helping our partners move through a substantial transition.
How Does Moonlight Think About Change?
Call us old fashioned, but we still believe in win-wins. We think empathetic compromise is the way forward. Anyone who has ever “moonlighted” knows this well. Let’s say you work a 40-hour corporate gig during the day and make your art at night. You know what it’s like to make sacrifices to do what you love. This tension exists in all of us individually and organizationally. We have beliefs, interests, and values that feel contradictory to the work we do each day. Instead of living in disequilibrium, we need to confront this tension head-on. Its the only way to co-exist.
Or take the dynamic between organizations and employees post-COVID. Employees are imposing new boundaries, asking harder questions about values, and evaluating business practices with a critical eye. Companies may still be focused on the bottom line, but they feel the pain from the lack of employee engagement. Here’s the harsh reality for most of us:
Organizations can’t accomplish their big goals without their people.
Employees can’t make a decent living (or have health insurance) without their organizations.
We believe we can accomplish significant change without harm. Because the world of work is currently in transition. We haven’t made it to the other side.
Therefore, we are your mediators, teachers, and coaches.
We help organizations get clear about their goals while also representing the voice of their teams.
We support teams by developing the skills to grow them into the leaders they wish they had.
The result is an organization that we can all be proud of — an ever-changing organism designed to serve many.
Check out our case study with WAP Sustainability as an example of weaving together business growth goals with culture as a top priority.
